20 Years Later, 'Nevermind' Box Set is True Nirvana

Smells Like Teen Spirit opens with Kurt Cobain firing off a simple riff. But it fast became the F-chord heard round the musical world.

The 'Nevermind' album cover features a baby swimming toward a dollar bill that is on a fishhook.

With a sonic vibe and video look that few expected to go mainstream, Nevermind ushered in a grungy era that saw rock's creative envelope pushed to new extremes. "You can hear where we come from, American hard-core music," says bassist Krist Novoselic, 46. "On Nevermind, we were promoting bands we liked."

Fans looking for insights into the creation of this seminal album can dive into a four-CD, one-DVD set ($136, out Sept. 27 and exclusive to Best Buy through Oct. 24). The bundle includes everything from a remastered original album to boombox recordings of rehearsals in a Tacoma, Wash., barn. A two-CD deluxe edition ($20) and a remastered Nevermind ($11) also are available.

With their untucked flannel shirts, messy hair and laid-back air, the three members of Nirvana projected pure slackerdom when they burst onto the cultural scene in 1991.

But that look was deceiving. As an expansive new multi-disc re-release of Nevermind reveals, the band worked incessantly for more than a year to craft an album that went on to rock the foundation of the music business in the same way that the Sex Pistols' (similarly titled) Never Mind the Bollocks caused a punk explosion in the disco age.

"These guys were far from slackers, they were very ambitious," says album producer Butch Vig, who spent time reminiscing about the late Kurt Cobain with both drummer Dave Grohl, now of the Foo Fighters, and bassist Krist Novoselic as the reissue was coming together.

"I remember that Kurt had these lists, how many albums he wanted to sell, what stadiums he wanted to play," says Vig, 56. "But ultimately, coming from a punk background, it was hard for him to deal with selling millions of albums."

Nevermind was pre-explosive fame.

At the original Seattle record release party for Nirvana's Nevermind, back in September 1991, Kurt Cobain raised a wry smile in disbelief when someone suggested his new album might possibly sell 100,000 copies: Even to the ambitious Cobain, that dream seemed outrageous.

So one can only imagine how wide Cobain's smile would have been if he'd witnessed last night's Nevermind 20th Anniversary Tribute Concert in Seattle. For the Experience Music Project on Tuesday night, twenty different bands covered songs from the album and other Nirvana tracks. The event was both a celebration of the release of the new Nevermind set (out next Tuesday) and a benefit for Susie Tennant, Nirvana's promotion person who put together that original 1991 record release party, and is now battling cancer. Cobain, more than anyone, would have been in support of that idea, as he adored Tennant.

VH1 will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's landmark album Nevermind by televising the never-before-seen concert movie Nirvana: Live at the Paramount on Friday, September 23rd at 11 p.m. ET/PT. The hour-long concert will be simulcast on VH1, VH1 Classic and Palladia.

The show, shot at the Paramount Theater in Seattle on Halloween in 1991, features performances of several songs from Nevermind, including "Breed," "Lithium" and "Polly," plus non-album cuts "Sliver" and "Aneurysm" and a cover of the Vaselines' "Jesus Doesn't Want Me For a Sunbeam."

Sept 9, 1991 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was released as a commercial single. The song didn't chart and wasn't expected to, the follow up 'Come As You Are' was mentioned as the potential hit, but manager Danny Goldberg later admitted, "the public heard it and it was instantaneous..."

Nirvana members open the vault on the making of the classic album

One afternoon in April 1990, Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and drummer Chad Channing arrived at producer Butch Vig's Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, after driving 1,900 miles from Seattle nonstop. "They rolled up in a van," says Vig, "and they probably hadn't taken a bath or shower in three or four days."

The songs Nirvana began recording that day would eventually become Nevermind, the album that kicked off the alt-rock explosion of the Nineties. Eight of the demos from that week, including ferocious test runs through "In Bloom" and "Lithium," are among the never-before-heard treasures on the 20th-anniversary edition of the landmark album, due September 27th. The set, which will be available in versions ranging from a single CD to a five-disc box, was assembled by Novoselic, Dave Grohl, Vig and Nirvana's management, as well as representatives of Cobain's estate. Along with a remastered version of Nevermind, the multidisc packages offer killer extras including B sides, alternate mixes and an entire live show.

Released in September 1991, Nirvana's sophomore album and major label debut elevated Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl from a critically acclaimed Aberdeen, Washington, cult band to generational spokesmen who'd unwittingly created a cultural shift and musical touchstone. Rising to No. 1 the world over by year's end and ultimately selling over 30 million copies worldwide, Nevermind would come to be much more than one of the most successful and influential albums of its or any era. As the album that returned unaffected rock ’n’ roll integrity and passion to the top of the charts, Nevermind would prove a singular inspiration to fans and musicians alike over the last two decades--and will undoubtedly do so for generations to come.

Now on the occasion of Nevermind's 20th anniversary, Universal Music Enterprises presents a full spectrum re-release worthy of such a pivotal classic. With configurations ranging from a 4-CD/1-DVD Super Deluxe Edition to a standard digital/CD remaster of the original album, the 20th anniversary reissue of Nevermind makes the most of the occasion, unearthing literally dozens of previously unreleased recordings, obscure B-sides, alternate mixes, radio sessions, studio rarities and live recordings, including a 1991 Halloween concert at Seattle's Paramount Theatre in its entirety.

The limited, numbered Super Deluxe Edition more than lives up to its name as one of the most expansive and ambitious collections of its kind with only 10,000 copies available in North America, and another 30,000 for the rest of the world. The Super Deluxe features not only the original remastered album and accompanying studio and live B-sides, but the first full official release of the pre-Nevermind demos recorded at producer Butch Vig's Smart Studios, as well as boombox recordings of subsequent rehearsals through which the listener can actually experience "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Come As You Are," "On A Plain" and others that take shape before his or her very ears. The Super Deluxe also offers an altogether new perspective on the finished Nevermind album exclusive to this format in the form of the Devonshire Mixes: the album as produced and mixed by Vig as opposed to the commercially released final version produced by Vig and mixed by Andy Wallace. Rounding out the Super Deluxe are a pair of previously unreleased BBC recordings and the aforementioned 1991 Paramount show available for the first time and exclusive to this format on CD and DVD (which also features all four music videos from Nevermind), as well as a stunning 90-page bound book full of rarely and never- before-seen photos, documents and various other visual artifacts of the Nevermind era.

The Nirvana Nevermind 20th anniversary reissue is also available as a 2-CD Deluxe Edition featuring the remastered album and B-sides, the Smart Studio sessions, boombox rehearsals and BBC sessions, a 4-LP, 180-gram heavyweight vinyl edition featuring the same 40 tracks as the Deluxe Edition, a remastered CD of the original album, and digital versions of the standard and deluxe editions. The Paramount concert, transferred from 16mm film and multi-track audio, is the only known Nirvana concert shot to film and will be available in a 1080p high-definition picture and uncompressed 5.1 surround sound and stereo on stand-alone Blu-ray, along with DVD and digital long form video formats.
